What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses numerous tiny needles to pierce the surface of your skin. The needles create controlled microwounds in your skin that stimulate your body’s natural collagen production.

Collagen is a protein that gives your skin volume. Over the years, collagen production decreases and wrinkles form. 

Scars, such as those from acne or surgery, form when collagen develops irregularly. By generating new collagen, microneedling helps your body remove old, damaged collagen and refresh your face. 

At North County Dermatology Clinic, Dr. Knight and the team use microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) to boost results and efficacy. The team uses 64 microneedles combined with RF technology to heat the layers of skin, stimulating increased collagen production for dramatic results.

What should I expect from an RF microneedling treatment?

Dr. Knight and the team help you decide if microneedling with RF is a good option for you. They’ll schedule your first microneedling appointment and talk with you about receiving a series of treatments. The office offers discounted rates for multiple sessions, and patients often see increased results with a series of microneedling treatments scheduled at least one month apart. 

Beginning one week before each microneedling treatment, you should avoid sun exposure and stop using any topical retinoids, like RetinA. This helps prepare your skin for treatment and minimizes downtime. 

Microneedling sessions take about one hour at North County Dermatology Clinic. The team prepares your face and neck for treatment and will apply a topical numbing cream for an hour or you may opt for nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") to help you stay comfortable during treatment. We use the ProNox^™ delivery system which is proven safe and effective for pain relief and relaxation. There is a nominal charge of $25 for this option.

The team directs the microneedling device over the surface of your skin. The microneedles pierce your skin to stimulate regeneration while RF heats the skin’s layers to promote collagen production deep below the surface.

What is recovery from microneedling like?

For 24-48 hours after microneedling use a gentle cleaner and avoid harsh toners or use of retinol or retin-A (tretinoin) products.
