IG-SRT Ultrasound Guided SRT Q&A

What is GentleCure image-guided superficial radiation therapy?

Image-guided superficial radiation therapy (image-guided SRT) from GentleCure is a form of radiation treatment for skin cancer. Ultrasound imaging guides the procedure, killing skin cancer cells with low-level X-ray energy.

Skin cancers develop when abnormal skin cells grow out of control. The two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Why would I get skin cancer?

Skin cancers are mainly caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. The most likely sources of UV radiation are the sun and tanning beds. It’s important to treat skin cancer; left untreated, it can grow, spread, and damage surrounding tissues.

Dr. Knight examines your skin to determine if a suspicious spot is skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma often appears as a shiny bump or a red, scaly patch. Squamous cell carcinoma can appear as a rough, scaly lesion or an open sore that doesn’t heal.

It’s a good idea to do monthly skin self-exams and ask North County Dermatology Clinic to check your skin at least once a year.

How are basal and squamous cell skin cancers treated?

Basal and squamous cell skin cancer treatments include:

Mohs surgery

Mohs is a specialized surgery that removes the cancer layer by layer, checking each layer under a microscope until no cancer remains.

Traditional superficial radiation therapy (SRT)

SRT uses radiation to kill cancer cells but lacks ultrasound imaging to guide treatment.

Image-guided superficial radiation therapy (image-guided SRT)

GentleCure image-guided SRT uses low-energy X-rays, similar to dental X-rays, to destroy cancer cells. Unlike Mohs surgery, which requires cutting into the skin, image-guided SRT is completely noninvasive no surgery, stitches, or scars.

It also differs from traditional SRT because it uses ultrasound guidance to ensure precise radiation delivery, reducing the risk of damaging healthy skin.

Who is a candidate for GentleCure image-guided SRT?

Image-guided SRT is an excellent choice for people who:

  • Want to avoid surgery and scarring
  • Have skin cancer in sensitive areas (like the face, ears, or hands)
  • Have medical conditions that make surgery risky
  • Prefer noninvasive treatments

The best way to determine if image-guided SRT is right for you is to talk with Dr. Knight. He can help you decide what’s best based on which skin cancer you have, where it’s at, and your personal health needs.
